Retro
Flip Clock
The retro flip
clock, formally known as an analog clock with
digital display, is a popular style of retro clock that has
endured throughout the decades of technological innovations.
Flip clocks were at the height of their popularly in the 1960s
and 1970s, but can still be found today.
The flip clock combines traditional technology of an analog
clock with a modern digital display. In many ways, this was the
clock that stood right on the cusp of modern and traditional
clock technologies. For this reason, many people remember and
still appreciate the style of a vintage flip
clock.
The clock is designed with two sets of rotating wheels. A
motor turns the wheels at different speeds with the fast wheel
making one revolution in each hour and the slower wheel making
one revolution every twenty four hours. The slower wheel
contains the hour and the marking of AM or PM, while the faster
wheel contains the minute numbers.
The numbers on a retro flip clock are displayed one at a
time on each leaf. The leaves rotate through the display to
show the time in a digital format. The numbers on a flip retro
clock move continuously, rotating slowly at all times rather
than flipping once each minute or hour.
The only drawback to the design of retro flip clocks are
that the gears cannot be wound backwards. This means that once
a year, the analogue clock must be wound forward twenty three
hours to accommodate daylight savings time.
Many people enjoy the simple, nostalgic look of a retro
style flip clock. For some people, it is the clock that they
grew up having in their home and they enjoy having this same
clock style today. Others enjoy the vintage feel of a flip
clock.
Today, vintage flip clocks are manufactured mainly for an
audience looking to capture this retro feel. Some cellular
phone homepages and computer displays even feature images
modeled after retro flip clocks. These modern takes on the
classic flip clock are a bit of nostalgia to brighten up
peoples' days. The retro flip clock is a
style that has survived to the present day on its vintage
appeal and fun style. For these reasons, it is likely to stay
around for awhile longer.
